Gary G. Williams, age 64 of The Plains died early Friday morning, May 4, 2012 at Pickering House, Lancaster.
Born Sept. 21, 1947 in Columbus, he is the son of H. George Williams of The Plains and the late Ila Mae Jones Williams.
A 1965 graduate of Ames Bern High School, he attended Columbus Business University. He was employed for several years at Meigs Mine #1 and also operated a construction business, Valley View Construction Co. with his brother. He was a member of UMWA Local 1857, The Plains VFW Post 7174, and Elks Lodge 973 BPOE.
He was a member of The Plains Church of the Nazarene. He was a Youth Leader at the Athens Church of the Nazarene and The Plains Church of the Nazarene. He also served on the Church’s Central Ohio District Advisory Board.
He was an avid bowler and golfer. He was active in several bowling leagues, serving on as a Board Member and was a league and state champion in the Duffers Golfing League. He was a basketball referee for 16 years and a baseball umpire for 14 years. He served two years as President of the Athens Umpire and Basketball Association.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam War, serving aboard the USS Saratoga.
Gary is survived by his wife of 44 years, Paulette Woolley Williams; two sons- Greg Allen (Melissa) Williams of Casa Grande, Arizona and Jason Edward Williams of The Plains; six grandchildren- Haley, Lauren, Jessica, Alexa, Dakota, and Emily Williams; his father H. George Williams of The Plains; a sister, Judith Ann (Bruce) Remmenga of The Plains; a brother David (Marilyn) Williams of The Plains; also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be conducted Monday 1:00 pm at The Plains Church of the Nazarene, Connett Rd., The Plains 45780 with Rev. Jim Lanning officiating. Burial will be in Athens Memory Gardens. Friends may call Sunday 2-4 and 6-8pm at Jagers & Sons Funeral Home, Athens and one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. Military Rites will be conducted by the Combined Color Guard at the cemetery.
