Howard I. Shull, age 95, formerly of Athens died Thursday Sept. 13, 2012 in Weimar, Texas.
Born Jan. 14, 1917 in Tuscarawas County, Ohio, he was the son of the late Peter & Nettie Swaim Shull.
A graduate of Uhrichsville High School, he was a graduate of Ohio State University with a B.S. in Industrial Arts and Education Administration. He earned his Master Degree from Ohio State University and his Doctor of Education from the University of Maryland.
During his teaching career, he taught all grades, elementary through graduate school. He started teaching at Ohio University in 1956, where he taught Small Engines, Hot and Cold Metals, Printing, Engineering Drawing and other courses. Professor Emeriti, he retired from Ohio University in June, 1982. He had also worked as a precision internal grinder at Timken Roller Bearing Co. in Canton and operated Howard’s Machine Shop in Columbus.
He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, serving in the China, Burma, and India Theatre with the Flying Cobra Squadron. He was awarded two Bronze Stars and one Silver Star.
He was a 65 year member and past master of Paramuthia Lodge 25 F.&A.M., past high priest of Athens Chapter 39 R.A.M., past master Athens Council 15 R.&S.M., past commander of Athens Commandery 15 K.T.. He was a Knight of the York Cross of Honour and member of Ohio Priory 18. He was a member of Athens Chapter 175 Order of Eastern Star, serving as past worthy patron. He served the Grand Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star as past grand patron in 1976. He was also a member of Athena Court 3 Order of Amaranth and North Star Shrine 45 White Shrine of Jerusalem.
Howard is survived by his daughter, Marie Joyce Shull Appel of Weimar, Texas; two grand- children, Jennifer Lynn Appel and Eric Allen (Sharon) Appel; two great grandchildren, Jackson Thomas Appel and Jamison Paige Appel; and a niece, Mary Coventry.
Besides his parents he is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Riegger Shull; three brothers and one sister.
A memorial graveside service will be held at Athens Memory Gardens, Athens on Thursday at 11:00 am. Friends may call Wednesday 6-8 pm at Jagers & Sons Funeral Home, Athens. Paramuthia Lodge 25 F.&A.M. will hold services Wednesday at 7:00 pm and Athens Chapter 175 O.E.S. will hold services Wednesday at 7:30 pm both at the funeral home.
