Ellie graduated from John Adams High School in Cleveland, Ohio Class of 1948. After graduation, she worked diligently for two years earning college funds. In 1950, Ellie was the first person in her family to attend college at Ohio University. She stepped onto the Ohio University campus with her childhood Hungarian friend, Maribeth Greeley Schleif. Ellie graduated on Sunday, June 13, 1954 with a degree in Sociology and a minor in Psychology. Between entering college and graduating, Ellie met the love of her life T. Richard "Dick" Robe (Civil Engineering). They had their first date in the spring of 1952 and married on August 27, 1955 at the First Hungarian Reformed Church in Cleveland, Ohio. After their honeymoon at Niagara Falls, and a brief stay living in Cleveland, Ohio, the newlyweds moved to Erie, Pennsylvania in October 1955. They moved on to Winterhaven, Florida in March 1956 as Ellie became a United States Airforce pilot's wife where her husband trained for USAF jets such as T-34, T-28, T-33 and later in advanced Jet Fighter Pilot training of F-86D, F-86L and also flying F-102 in Air Defense Command. Together, the Air Force moved them to Big Springs, Texas, then Sherman, Texas, and finally to Fairfield, California at Travis AFB. In their lifetime together, Ellie and Dick moved home locations 21 times, including a move overseas in 1973 to Edinburgh, Scotland with their four children (ages 3,7,12 & 14) where Dr. Robe served as a visiting professor at the University of Edinburgh. As on American soil, Ellie's natural ability to connect with others increased her lifelong friend count on another continent. A majority of her married life was in Lexington, Kentucky (15 years) and Athens, Ohio (30-plus years). Ellie enjoyed incredible adventures at her breathless pace in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Florida, Texas, California, Colorado, Kentucky, Virginia, Scotland, South Carolina and Georgia. Ellie's children were born in four different states: Texas, Ohio, California and Kentucky.
Ellie's godly legacy and nurturing nature lives on in the lives and upon the hearts of those who loved her and whose lives she touched with her faith, her energy, her humor and her limitless love. Ellie was a committed, generous and thoughtful daughter, sister, cousin, niece, wife, mother, aunt, grandmother and great grandmother and friend. Ellie always showed boundless love to those she came in contact with daily. Her super power was being a PRAYER WARRIOR! If she knew you, she prayed for you. Ellie's prayers certainly help keep her fighter pilot husband alive and flying! When not praying, Ellie thrived by doing deep dives into her Bible, talking & sharing about it and also journaling in her numerous tablets about life events. Ellie enjoyed saying, "I am not growing old. I'm becoming a collectible!" If Ellie had your home address, she would send you a postcard, letter, greeting card or note, with a flavorful tea bag enclosed. She kept the USPS busy! Ellie inherited from her beloved mom (Margaret) the gift, talent and Hungarian heritage of baking delicious breads, cookies, treats and savory bacon. Ellie's signature culinary treats are her famous banana and nut breads and her Hungarian walnut kifli cookies. An avid reader since grammar school plus always hungry for learning and exploring new horizons, Ellie also enjoyed stamp collecting, bird watching, volunteering at church, driving to area elementary schools teaching art appreciation, with her young children in tow – chasing down book mobiles to cultivate the joy of reading, cutting coupons to save money (to purchase more books), documenting in meticulous detail each photograph within her grasp for preserving information, serving on the school board, a band parent, a Scout parent, preparing mouth-watering homecooked family meals back in the day, selling Amway for a bit to help her parents, gardening with a green thumb like no other, never driving past a child's lemonade stand without purchasing several servings, playing board games (everyone wanted genius Ellie on their Trivial Pursuit team!) and cards with family, collecting tea spoons from around the world on their globetrotting trips, teaching Sunday School and directing Bible studies, never walking away from a bowl of ice cream or root beer float, devouring the Wall Street Journal and filling out crossword puzzles, being a Red Hats Society member, cheering for the Cleveland Indians and the Ohio State Buckeyes, and last but not least, placing valuable correspondences from cherished friends and family in her favorite sheet protectors then storing in unique notebook binders. Her interests and activities were limitless. On the Ohio University campus within the Stocker Engineering building, there is a conference room named after Ellie and husband Dean Dr. T. Richard Robe. In addition, established in 1996 to honor Dean Dr. T. Richard Robe and Eleanora K. Robe, the Robe Leadership Institute (RLI) has been at the forefront of integrating leadership education within the engineering field. Ellie entered life with an inhale and exited life with an exhale. And in between, Ellie lived moments that take our breaths away. PROVERBS 31:25.
Ellie's entire family extends heartfelt thanks to the compassionate staff at StoryPoint in Powell, Ohio and the loving healthcare workers with Gentiva Hospice of Columbus, Ohio who treated her like family.
In honor of Ellie's lifelong love of knowledge, the family requests that in lieu of flowers, donation check can be made to THE OHIO UNIVERSITY FOUNDATION and write on the memo line "Robe Cutler Scholarship".
