Fred E. Hixson, age 92 of Flatwoods, KY, formerly of Albany, died Friday morning, May 24, 2024 at his home.  Born May 22, 1932 in Athens, he was the son of the late Edwin Hixson and Flora Everett Hixson.

He attended Ames-Bern High School and had been employed at Abex Corp. for 22 years, Securitas of Columbus and was manager of Spreading Oak Trailer Park.  He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.  He was wounded during the battle at Heartbreak Ridge and was awarded the Purple Heart.  He was the only survivor of his platoon during that battle.

Fred was of the Baptist Faith.  He was an avid horseman and enjoyed riding motorcycles.  He had been residing with his grandson and his wife, Greg & Stephanie, in Flatwoods, KY for three years.

Fred is survived by his wife of 72 years, Beverly Bennett Hixson; two sons, Robert (Kathy) Hixson of Columbus and Rick (Jackie) Hixson of Albany; eleven grandchildren, Greg (Stephanie) Hixson of Flatwoods, KY, Richard Hixson of Athens, Jennifer (Susheel) Mirmira of San Diego, CA, Glynni Hixson of Athens, Kayla Kelleher of Athens, Chris Hixson of Columbus, Brandon Hixson of Albany, Ashton Hixson of Albany, Shera Hixson of Muncie, IN, Hanna Hixson of Los Angeles, CA, and Kory Hixson of Albany; twenty two great grandchildren; two great, great grandchildren; and a brother, Robert (Pat) Hixson of Orlando, FL.

Beside his parents he is preceded in death by a son, Gary Hixson; a great granddaughter, Kaitlynn Hixson; a brother, Bill Hixson; and a half brother, Dwight Everett.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, May 30th, at 1:00 p.m. at Jagers & Sons Funeral Home, Athens with Pastor Larry Swart officiating.  Burial will be in Athens Memory Gardens.  Friends may call Wednesday 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.  Military Rites will be conducted by K.T.
