The Plains
Roberta Geraldine (Queen) Stump of The Plains, died peacefully at home on September 29, 2018. Loved by her family and friends, "Jerry" will be missed by all who knew her. She was born in Buckhannon, West Virginia on November 5, 1920 to Ovid and Ocie Queen.
On August 26, 1939, Jerry married Rev. Randall T. Stump. During WW II, she worked as an inspector at an officers' military uniform company. Later, Jerry and Randall farmed and then, owned several businesses in the Buckhannon area.
After Randall joined the Methodist ministry, the family moved to Illinois where he completed graduate school at Northwestern University. Subsequent moves included pastorates in West Virginia and Ohio where Jerry was active in many church and civic organizations.
In 1971, Jerry earned a B.S. in Education from Ohio University. During her teaching career, she taught first and second grade for the Ironton and Logan School systems. Retiring at age 71, she received special recognition for her teaching and commitment to students.
Throughout her life, Jerry was active in the United Methodist church holding offices at the local, district, and conference levels. Jerry was a sixty-year-plus member of the Eastern Star. While living in Logan, Ohio, she was active in the Hocking Hills Artists and Craftsman Association.
Jerry is survived by her children, Linda (Joel) Bitters of Athens, Ohio, Sherrie (Joseph) Bossart of The Plains as well as her grandchildren, Aaron (Meghan) Bitters of Denver, Colorado and Colin Bitters of Athens, Ohio, and great-grandchildren, Abigail and Madeleine Bitters of Denver.
Besides her parents, Jerry was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-one years, Randall Stump, and three sisters, Angeline Marple, Ernestine Stone, and Omagine Smith.
Calling hours will be held from 2:00-4:00 P.M. on Wednesday, October 3, 2018, at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home immediately followed by a service with Rev. Mark Mitera officiating. Graveside services will be held at Heavener Cemetery in Buckhannon on Thursday, October 4, 2018.
