Obituary

Larry Lynn Buell, 89 of Athens, OH passed away peacefully on July 4, 2026, at Grant Medical Center in Columbus, OH.  Larry was born October 11, 1936 in Hamilton, Butler County, Ohio Larry was the son of the late Paul W. and Lyda M. Buell.  His childhood years were spent in Camden, Preble County, Ohio on the family farm.

Larry was a 1954 graduate of Camden High School.  He then graduated from Middle Tennessee State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1969 and a Master's degree of Science from the University of Arkansas in 1972

His military career began in the United States Air Force from 1955 – 1980.  For 14 years Larry was a Master Sergeant then 11 years as a Commissioned Officer retiring with the rank of Captain.  He served on several military bases state-side and in the Countries of Newfoundland, Spain and Germany.

After his military career he began his Senior Administrator Career in higher education. From 1979 – 1988 at Ohio University, Larry served as the Director of Computing and Learning Services. At Ohio State University from 1988 – 2000 he served as Assistant Vice President and Director for University Systems, and as Director for the Ohio Academics Research Network (OARNet) Statewide. Larry also held the position of Chief Information Officer for Columbus City Schools and ending his career as a Networking Consultant for The Ohio State University

On January 21,1956 he began his 40-year marriage to the late Jane Stevenson Buell. They are survived by their son, Captain United States Navy Retired, Kenneth P. (Nicolette) Buell.  Granddaughters Katherine (Brandon) Fessel, Victoria (Fiancé Lizzy Miller) Buell, and Emily (Fiancé Alex Danko) Buell and great-grandchildren Madeline and Connor Fessel.  Their daughter Barbara J. (Dale) Hutchison and their sons Adam and David Hutchison

Larry was proceeded in death by brothers; Don P., Theodore J., Paul C., and Michael Buell. Brother in-law Wm. Buzz Whitlatch, sister in-laws; Wanda, Eunice Albert Buell and Jean Casterberry.

Larry united his life with Carla Hudnell, April 16, 1999.  He is survived by his wife Carla and  step-daughter, Carleen (Robert) Dotson and Granddaughter Carleen Kay Dotson all of Athens, Ohio. Also survived are Brother in-law Daniel Castleberry and Sister in-law Tracy Whitlatch. Larry is also survived by many nieces, nephews, extended family members and dear friends.

Visitation will take place on Saturday, July 11, 2026 at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, 24 Morris Ave., Athens, OH from 1-4 with service starting at 3:30. per Larry's request, following the services he will be cremated and interned in Camden, OH at a later date.  A gathering will take place immediately following the services at the Ohio University Inn (from 4:00 – 8:00 pm) 331 Richland Ave., Athens, OH, please come and share stories and some laughs with us.  In leu of flowers, a memorial contribution can be made to the Southeast Ohio Regional Food Bank – c/o Hocking Athens Perry Community Action, PO Box 220, Glouster, OH 45732.  Please be sure to indicate SE Ohio Regional Food Bank – Larry Buell, this was one of Larry's favorite charities.
