Larry
Gibson
d. May 7, 2026
Athens
Larry Edward Gibson, 77, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family, and pastor on Thursday, May 7, 2026, in Columbus.
Larry was a 1966 graduate of Athens High School, where he proudly played baseball, and later earned his Police Science degree from Hocking College. He proudly served as a law enforcement officer with the Athens City Police Department before continuing his career with the State of Ohio in law enforcement. Larry was also a proud United States Army veteran and lifelong Republican.
He was preceded in death by his father, Raymond M. Gibson; his mother, June Bateman Gibson; and his brother, Fred D. Gibson.
Larry is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Debora; his four children, Mindy (Todd), Mark (Ana), Greg (Jasmine), and Valerie (Kolt); and his ten beloved grandchildren: Alyssa, Audra, Jimena, Carlota, Zoey, Philip, John Paul, Hunter, Kash, and Skye.
Larry will be remembered as a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather who deeply loved his family. He enjoyed watching his favorite sports teams, the Cincinnati Bengals and Cincinnati Reds, and never let a loss upset him for long. He especially loved fishing at Joanie's Pond and cherished teaching his children how to fish.
His love for animals, especially dogs, was evident throughout his life, particularly during his work and training with the K-9 unit while serving in the military. Larry's kindness toward animals continued at home, where he regularly fed deer and other wildlife in his backyard. He had a special connection with animals that many admired.
Known affectionately as "Lar," he was also a member of the trivia team at The Plains Eclipse. Larry was recently baptized on April 1 by his friend and Pastor Rick of Grace Powell Church.
Larry was well known for his friendly, cheerful spirit and wonderful sense of humor. He was truly one of a kind and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
