Louise North
Gray
Dec 6, 1923 — Nov 27, 2018
The Plains
Louise North Gray, 94, died peacefully on November 27, at the Lindley Inn with her sons at her side. She was born on December 6, 1923 in Summit, New Jersey.
Louise was a graduate of Wellesley College and received her masters degree in Christian Education from Union Theological Seminary. Her faith led her to spend a life committed to peace and justice. She was active in the Civil Rights movement of the 60's, working on desegregation and fair housing issues; was an early organizer for the Nuclear Freeze movement; taught English to immigrants in inner city Cleveland; worked in adult literacy programs; and opened her home to resettling immigrants from Liberia, Vietnam, Egypt and Somalia. Louise was a social worker in New Orleans during WWII where she met Albert, her husband of 60 years. They lived and raised their family in Berea, Ohio, and were members of the Brookpark Community Church of the Brethren. Louise was a world traveler, bird lover, gardener, artist and poet.
She is survived by her two sons, David (Bebe Miller) of Columbus and Steve (Ellen) of Athens; and grandchildren Felicia and Molly Gray, Madeline and Samuel Gray, and Alex and Lena Rothstein.
Louise was preceded in death by her husband and her beloved daughter Susan Gray Rothstein.
The family wishes to thank everyone at the Lindley Inn for many years of kind and loving care, as well as her previous home caregivers Claudia and Melanie.
A memorial service will be held at a later date in Marshfield, MA. Local arrangements are with Jagers & Sons Funeral Home, Athens. Please share a memory, a note of condolence or sign the online register book at www.jagersfuneralhome.com.
