Max
Carsey
Apr 25, 1937 — Mar 7, 2025
Athens
Max Wendell Carsey, 87, passed away on Friday morning, March 7, 2025 at The Laurels of Athens. The son of Jesse Wendell Carsey and Elpha Eileen Russell Carsey was born at home on the family farm, April 25, 1937. Preceding Max in death were his parents, brother Seldon Carsey, sister Marilyn Cade, daughter Connie Steortz, and father and mother-in-law, Leonard and Pauline Martin.
Survivors are his wife of 64 years Sallie Martin Carsey, daughter Karen Smith, husband Pat and daughter Christy Lee, husband Donald. Grandchildren A.J. Smith, fiancée Stephanie and great granddaughters Kolby and Kennedy, Grant Smith, wife Olivia, Jesse Adams, Kendra Lee Donnelly, husband Ryan. Also surviving is sister-in-law Peggy Carsey, along with several nieces and nephews.
Max was a barber on Court Street for over 60 years. He started barber school in Columbus, Ohio, the day after his high school graduation in May 1955. In December of that same year, he started work with his father on Court Street. The barber shop is in its original location on Court Street and still known as "Carsey's Barber Shop." Max and his father were barbers for a combined 125 years.
For someone who was a great husband and father, Max was also a gardener, squirrel and rabbit hunter, ball player, runner, pilot, craps player, and friend. He always had a garden with lots of corn and tomatoes, which he shared with friends and neighbors. Max ran and won his age division in the annual Indian Summer Run. Max ran several marathons in Athens and Columbus and qualified for the Boston marathon. He received his private pilot's license and had 100 consecutive rolls on the craps table in Las Vegas. There was a plaque on the Fremont Casino wall, because 100 rolls set a record for the 70 years they had been keeping count. He pitched a perfect softball game playing for Goodwin's Super Duper in June of 1984 and did a solo parachute jump in West Virginia. We always laughed when he talked about training for the jump. They jumped off a picnic table!
Starting in the Fall of 1993, Max and Sallie traveled with Jan's Fans to the Ohio University men's basketball games. Jan even planned Summer trips as well. We traveled the USA, Canada, Mexico, and internationally. Thank you Jan.
Max also planned wonderful family vacations each Summer. Men came to get a haircut, told Max where they had traveled, what they saw and Max made a note of this. We hiked the Grand Canyon to the bottom, went swimming in the Great Salt Lake, saw the Redwoods, the Rocky Mountains, the desert, the amusement parks from Astroland in Texas, Dollywood in Tennessee, Universal Studios and Disney World in Florida, and visited the fun beaches on the Atlantic coast.
Calling hours will be held at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home on Sunday, March 9th 2025 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. Services will be held immediately following calling hours with Reverand Williard Love presiding. Burial will be held in the New Marshfield Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alexander's Future Foundation Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 204 Albany, Ohio 45710 or the charity of your choice.
Rest in peace. Sixty-four years were not enough and I'd do it all again because you were the love of my life and the super glue of our family.
