Sgt. Myron Lee Yaw, born October 4, 1924, in Glouster, Ohio, to Otto Virgil Yaw and Norma Wilson Yaw, will finally be coming home after nearly 82 years.

Myron graduated from Athens High School in 1942 and attended Ohio University before enlisting in the United States Army on April 7, 1943.

On December 26, 1944, while serving as a ball turret gunner aboard a B-24 aircraft, Sgt. Yaw was lost when his plane was shot down by anti-aircraft fire over what is now present-day Kędzierzyn-Koźle, Poland. His remains have been overseas for nearly 82 years.

Through the efforts of DNA identification and the United States Army, Myron will finally return home to his family. The family transfer of his remains is scheduled for September 25, 2026.

Calling hours will be held Friday, October 2, 2026, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Jagers & Sons Funeral Home in Athens, Ohio. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home, Saturday, October 3, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., followed by military honors at Maplewood Cemetery in Glouster, Ohio.

Sgt. Yaw's older brother, Sgt. John Milton Yaw, also a ball turret gunner, was killed in action on July 31, 1944, when his aircraft was shot down near Ploesti, Romania.

Myron was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Earl Yaw, John Yaw, Bob Yaw, and Roy Yaw; and his sisters, Naomi Yaw, Chole Yaw Dishong, Evelyn Yaw Wilson, Betty Yaw Rutter, and Jo Ann Yaw.

He is survived by his nieces and nephews: Spence "Butch" Rutter (for whom the aircraft "Butch" was named), Jean Rutter Lott, Rodney Rutter, Suzanne Rutter Lewis, Joy Yaw, Chloe Dishong Barnett, and Robin Yaw.

Myron’s return marks the end of a long and emotional wait for his family. After nearly eight decades away from home, he will finally be laid to rest among his loved ones, with the military honors befitting his service and sacrifice.
