Penny Lynn Brooks, age 68, of Guysville, passed away, Friday , Dec. 11, 2020 at OhioHealth O'Bleness Hospital, Athens. Born Nov. 19, 1952 in Athens, she was the daughter of the late Lloyd Thompson, Sr. and Dorothy Smith Thompson.
A 1971 graduate of Federal Hocking High School, she attended Tri-County JVS where she studied Secretarial and Clerical skills.
She was employed with the Athens County Board of Election for 47 years where she was Deputy Director. She had also been the Director of the Board of Elections. She was involved in politics her entire life. She was a member of the Central Committee Carthage Township also serving as Secretary, a member of the Ohio Association of Election Officials, serving as Past President, and the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. She was awarded the Lifetime Achievement from the Athens County Democratic Party, Athens County Democratic Volunteer of the Year, Ohio Election Official Volunteer of the Year, and honored by the Ohio Senate as having the most years of Public Service with the Board of Elections. Her life was dedicated to making sure everyone had the right to vote.
Her family was most important to her. She also enjoyed her trips to Las Vegas and pets and animals.
Penny is survived by her husband of 48 years, Tony L. Brooks; two sons, Tony L. Brooks II and his partner Dustin Musick of Athens and Michael Brooks of Athens; three grandchildren, Ian Basilio, Emilee Basilio and Adison Rau; the mother of her grandchildren, Kelly Basilio; her sister, Patty Barnhart of Athens; her brother, Sonny Thompson of Chauncey; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She is also survived by her "Work Family" and special friends, Debbie Quivey, Carolee Simons, Olga Thomas, Carol Perry, Bernita Stotts and Shantelle McLaughlin.
Besides her parents she is preceded in death by a sister, Margie Dailey Bevins; and a brother in law, Bob Barnhart, Sr.
Due to the COVID 19 Pandemic, a public graveside will be held at Athens Memory Gardens on Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Phil Foster officiating. A Celebration of Her Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society.
