Obituary

Raymond Joseph Abraham was born into Eternal Life on Wednesday, October 3, 2018. Born in Athens, February 5, 1934, he was the son of Joseph and Philomena Abraham.

A graduate of Athens High School (1951) and Ohio University (1955) he was a fine arts instructor in the Athens City Schools and taught communiversity classes. He was a videographer and produced shows "As Time Goes By" and "Haunted Athens" series on local and regional television. He appeared in movies and television and was a film-casting assistant. Abraham was employed in family businesses (Angelos's Pizza, Dexter Subs, Studio 38 Lounge, The Star and the Security Bank & Travel Agency).

He served in the 237th Engineering Battalion, U.S. Seventh Army, Germany, taught military personnel and dependents, wrote for the United States Stars & Stripes, and was classified for top secret with the FBI. He was active in campus organizations (Class President, Blue Key, Newman Club President) and was alumni chapter advisor for Phi Kappa Theta Fraternity. He served on the Athens County Heart Fund, Christ the King Church Council and other community projects. He designed a program cover which is in the time-capsule at the Recreation Park. A painting of Pope Paul VI was acknowledged in a letter from His Holiness and a portrait he did of John F. Kennedy was acknowledged in a letter from Jacqueline Kennedy. A hand-lettered Christmas card containing over 18,000 names of Athens and area residents was sent to the US hostages in Israel in 1980 and was acknowledged by Presidents Carter and Reagan.

Abraham initiated the Athens High School Bulldog Hall of Fame which contains photos and resumes of graduates who have been successful in the arts, sports, medicine, military and became known statewide, nationally, and internationally.

He was a true humanitarian and looked for the good in others. He enjoyed meeting many celebrities and other notables and worked with many, both in front of and behind the camera. He met ten Presidents during his lifetime and one of his most memorable days was in 1956 when he had a special audience with Pope Pius XII at the summer palace, Castro Condolfo, Rome, Italy.

Survivors include a brother, Mitchell (Ellen) Abraham; sister in-laws Irene and Delores; several nieces and nephews; and special friend Annamae Johnson.

Besides his parents, Abraham was preceded in life by his sister Julia Pate; brothers William, Paul, Charles, and Brig. Gen. (Ret) James; a nephew Edward; sister-in-Iaws Meryl and Mary; and his beloved dog companions Brandy, Droopus, and Carney; special friends Marcia Rose and Ramona and Junior Ramon, Munich, Germany.

Calling hours will be at Jagers & Sons Funeral Home on Oct. 16 th from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. with the Rosary service to follow.  Mass of Christian Burial will at St. Paul's Catholic Church on Oct. 17 th at 10:00 a.m. with Fr. Mark Moore as celebrant.  Interment will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

May God grant that he rest in peace with his mother (who was killed in an automobile accident in 1939 at age 38) and all his family, pets and other loved ones.
