Obituary

Richard (Dick) Marvin Craig, 94, of Coolville passed at 12:12am on Tuesday, November 6, 2018 at Kobacker House in Columbus surrounded by his three loving daughters following a brief illness.

He was born August 6, 1924 in Bartlett, OH, the son of the late Clarence and Leah (Boggs) Craig. He was a 1942 graduate of Ames Bern High School and retired from the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 18 in Columbus where he worked as a heavy equipment operator for 30+ years, participating in the construction of several major interstate projects in Ohio and surrounding states. Richard was a member of the VFW, Legion, AmVets, Elks, and IUOE Local 18 District 3 for 60 years.

He joined the U.S. Navy in 1942 and served as an ARM3c Combat Air Crewman Bombing Squadran 5 in San Pedro, CA. during WII. In 1945 he met his wife Frankie in California where they were married before settling on a farm in Joy, OH. In 1958 they built the first all electric home in the State of Ohio in Coolville on 32 acres. Richard, known for his vision and can-do attitude, turned his 32 acres into a RV park in 1968 during the RV and camping boom with the help of family and friends. Carthage Gap Campground opened in 1971. In 1995 he sold the campground and lived in Florida until returning to Athens in 2000. Richard was always ready to offer his help to anyone that needed it. He loved his family dearly and was loved by all in return.

Richard is survived by his daughters, Gloria (Terry) Kellenberger of Columbus, Barbara (Jim) Hines of Athens, Brenda (Mike) Carsey of Columbus; his grandchildren, Bradley (Paula) Kellenberger, Nathan (Stephanie) Kellenberger, Justin (Erin) Tague, Cortnie (Scott Pederson) Kitzmiller; his great grandchildren, Griffin, Noel, Reed, William and Sarah Kellenberger and Tristan, Evan and Kierstyn Tague; sister-in-law Carolyn (Bowman) Craig, many cousins, nieces and nephews, and a very dear and special friend Winefred Patterson.

In addition to his parents and 7 brothers and sisters, Richard was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Frances "Frankie" (Reynolds) Craig.

The family would like to express their genuine thanks to Kobacker House and their staff in Columbus and OhioHealth Hospice for the wonderful care he received.

Funeral service and a celebration of Richard's life will be held Saturday at 11:00am at Jagers & Sons Funeral Home, 24 Morris Ave., Athens, OH 45701 with Chaplain Mark Mitera officiating. Interment will be in Athens Memory Gardens with full Military Rites. The Craig Family will receive family and friends on Friday, November 9 th , from 4:00pm to 8:00pm at the funeral home.
