Ronald E. Downey, 79, of Athens, formerly of Columbus, passed away early Thursday morning, Feb. 1, 2024 at Hickory Creek Nursing Center, The Plains.  Born Jan. 31, 1945 in Biloxi, Mississippi, he was the son of the late Perry Oliver Downey and Carrie Lou Allman Downey.

A 1962 graduate of Athens High School, he graduated in 1967 with a Bachelor of Science in Journalism from Ohio University.  He was the first member of his family to graduate from college.  He had been employed as a sales representative and marketing director with several companies including Enesco Gift Shops and as a financial advisor with Chase Bank in Columbus prior to retirement.  He enjoyed creative writing, photography, tennis and music.

Ron is survived by two sisters, Linda (Roger) Stiles of Columbus and Tina (Forrest) Ervin of Athens; a brother, David (Tammy) Downey of Marietta; nieces and nephews, Todd Stiles, Shelby (Rusty) Richey, Matthew (Jennifer) Ervin, Amanda Ervin, Cody Thomas, Brandon Marling and Nathan Marling; great nieces and great nephews, Rusty Ray Richey, Jackie Richey, Isaiah Ervin, Thaddeus Gouzoulis, Sebastian Gouzoulis, Gabriella Gouzoulis, Atticus Gouzoulis, Connor Ervin, Noah Marling, Jaxson Marling, Ripley Marling and Lincoln Thomas; a great, great nephew, Jeffery Greathouse; several very special cousins including Sue, Sandy, Jim, Darla, and Linda.

Besides his parents he is preceded in death by a sister, Jennie M. Downey in 2007.  Funeral service will be conducted Tuesday 1:00 p.m. at Jagers & Sons Funeral Home, Athens with Pastor Matthew Ervin officiating.  Burial will be in Athens Memory Gardens.  Friends may call Tuesday 11:00 a.m. until time of service at the funeral home.  Living Water Worship Center in Albany will be hosting a meal immediately following the graveside service.  All are invited to attend.  Please share a memory, a note of condolence or sign the online register at www.jagersfuneralhome.com.
