Obituary

Sara "Sally" Walters Harner, 71, of Athens, passed away on Aug 30th, 2018, at OhioHealth O'Bleness Memorial hospital surrounded by her loving family after a courageous battle with cancer.

Sally was born on January 3rd, 1947, in Harrisburg, Pa., the second-youngest of six daughters born to Harry E. Walters and Sara (Beam) Walters of Hershey, Pa. In addition to her parents, Sally was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years Frederick (Fred) Charles Harner, Jr., four sisters, Nancy Morrett, Dorothy (Dot) O'Donnell, Sandra Saxman and Helen Ouimet.

On September 3rd, 1966, Sally married Fred in Hummelstown, Pa. whom she attended high school with at Lower Dauphin High School and later reconnected while both attended Harrisburg Area Community College. After living in Syracuse, NY while her husband finished his undergraduate work, they moved to Athens in 1969 where Fred attended graduate school at Ohio University. The couple remained in Athens for the rest of their lives.

Sally is survived by her three loving children and daughters-in-law: Heather Harner of Phoenix, Az., Fred Harner and wife Carol of New York City and Noah Harner of Athens and ex-wife Renee Obyc Harner of Columbus; three wonderful grandsons Spencer, Zachary and Quinn. She is also survived by her sister Mary Timmins and brother-in-law Barry Timmins of Hummelstown, Pa., brothers-in-law Ed Saxman of Concord, NC and Joe O'Donnell of Middletown, Pa.; and many wonderful nieces and nephews.

Sally was kind, gentle, warm and loving towards everyone. She enjoyed simple pleasures - crochet, cross-stitch, reading, cooking, music and spending time with her family. She created masterful cross-stitch designs and enjoyed making afghans, hats and sweaters for her family. However, nothing provided more joy in her life than spending time with her three grandsons, Spencer, Zachary and Quinn. Towards the end of her cancer battle she often mentioned there was no better pain medicine than spending time with her grandsons. Thankfully, she was able to do that in her final weeks.

Sally was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Athens and worked as an office administrator at various businesses in Athens over the years, most recently for the last six years at Mark Porter Autoplex in Athens. Her co-workers at Mark Porter were like family to her and she made several lasting friendships during her time there. She was extremely grateful for the love and support she received from her employer and co-workers while she battled her illness.

A celebration of her life will be planned in Athens at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society and OhioHealth Hospice of Athens.  Arrangements are with Jagers & Sons Funeral Home, Athens.  Please share a memory, a note of condolence or sign the online register book at www.jagersfuneralhome.com.
