Obituary

Sharon L. Horel died November 26, 2018 in Athens, OH. She was born Feb 6, 1942 to Doraen & Estelle Little in Oak Park, IL. Sharon grew up and attended school in Maywood, IL, then began employment with the FBI in 1960 in Chicago. In July 1968, she married Robert E. Horel, a special agent with the FBI and moved to Athens. Bob survives. She is survived also by a loving son and daughter-in-law, Rob and Dr. Christine Accardo Horel of Towson MD, and grandsons, Robert Maximilian (Max) and Leo Dane who were the apples of her eye. Also surviving are a sister, Patricia Holmer of Menominee, MI, a sister-in-law, Anne Little, a niece and four nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, brothers Bruce and Russell, a sister-in-law, brother-in-law, nephew, and numerous aunts and uncles.

Sharon was a secretary for Atco, Inc. for 19 years before her retirement in 2004. In 1985 she became a disaster volunteer for the Athens chapter of the Red Cross and was devoted to this work. Sharon continued her service to the Red Cross as a member of, and past Chairperson and Secretary of the chapter's board and in 2008 was a recipient of the prestigious Clara Barton Honor Award for Meritorious Volunteer Leadership. The adage in which she believed was a quote from Dr. Seuss, "Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not." She was a 25 year+ member of Albany Eastern Star having held the offices of Worthy Matron and Secretary. She and her husband were avid square dancers with the Athens Allemanders and later the Belles & Beaus of Pomeroy. They were antique collectors and regularly attended area auctions. Their antique interest continued as vendors at an antique mall. Sharon also volunteered with the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway and served many years as Membership Secretary. She could be opinionated, but her opinions were more often found to be correct. Sharon will be greatly missed for her ready smile and quick wit.

At her request, she will be cremated. Arrangements are with Jagers and Sons Funeral Home in Athens. A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Red Cross of SE Ohio, 100 S. May Ave, Athens 45701; or Nationwide Children's Hospital, Columbus OH; or the Athens Foundation in her memory. Please share a memory, a note of condolence or sign the online register book at www.jagersfuneralhome.com.
