William (Bill) Monroe Johnson Jr., age 88, The Plains, Ohio, passed away at Riverside Hospital in Columbus, Ohio on Friday November 16 th , 2018. Born July 19 th , 1930 in Chauncey, Ohio, he was the son of the late William Monroe Johnson Sr. and Gayle Marie (Figgins) Johnson. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War from January 1951 to November 1954 where he served as a radio operator aboard ship, using Morse Code to send messages between naval ships and aircraft. He was introduced to his wife, Lindsey Anne (Hutchinson) Johnson, by his sister, Dixie (Johnson) Carpenter while serving in the Navy. They were married August 26 th , 1955 and have 6 children.
Bill was an upholsterer and a skilled craftsman, learning the upholstery and furniture refinishing trade from his father, William Monroe Johnson Sr. beginning at the age of 9. He was known for the quality of his work specializing in antique furniture. Bill and his wife, Lindsey, are owners of Johnson's Upholstery and Lindsey's Collectibles in The Plains. Bill was also a licensed Ham Radio Operator and a lifetime member of The Plains VFW.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, William and Gayle Figgins Johnson, father-in law Lindsay (Red) Hutchinson, mother-in-law, Mildred (Millie) Hutchinson, brothers Robert Johnson and Gerald Johnson, brothers-in-law Blaine Carpenter, Gene Hutchinson, and Thomas Conley Sr., sisters-in-law Thelma Singer, Agnes Omohundro, Freda Conley, and Martha Cox, daughter-in-law Martha (Margie) Krah Johnson, infant great-grandson, Titan Christopher Gansel; and special cousin Jack Ryan.
He is survived by his wife, Lindsey Anne (Hutchinson) Johnson, sister Dixie Carpenter, Albany, OH, and brother and sister-in-law, John and Janice Johnson, Reynoldsburg, Ohio; sisters-in-law Earlene Johnson , Reynoldsburg, Ohio and Shirley Johnson, Columbus, Ohio; brother-in-law and sister-in-Law – Frank and Shirley Hutchinson, Athens, Ohio; children Gina and Bill Fetty, Athens, Ohio; Vicki Pidcock, The Plains, Ohio; Bill and Antia Johnson, The Plains, Ohio; Bob and Carol Johnson, Athens, Ohio; John Johnson, Leesburg, Virginia; and Kevin and Tamara Johnson, The Plains, Ohio ; 14 grandchildren Aaron and Brittany Pidcock, Mt Gilead, Ohio; Heather and Richie Dillinger, Albany, Ohio; Rob and Michelle Fetty, Clearwater, Florida; Tony and Brooke Fetty, Ladson, South Carolina; Mike and Whitney Fetty, The Plains, Ohio; Michael and Estefani Johnson, Manassas, Virginia; Maria and Andrew Looker, Circleville, Ohio; Amy Johnson and Sarah Martin, Alexandria, Virginia; Jessica and Ryan Gansel, Fruitland Park, Florida; Johnny Johnson, The Plains, Ohio; Bobby Johnson, Sarah Johnson, Kaitlyn Johnson and Elijah Johnson, all of Athens, Ohio; 13 great-grandchildren; special cousins Lindley Ryan, Athens, Ohio, and Tom and Sharon Ryan, also of Athens; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral Service will be at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 20 th , at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, Athens with Pastor William Hixon officiating. Visitation will be Monday, November 19 th , 5-8 p.m., and Tuesday, November 20 th , at 11 a.m. until time of services. Burial will be at Athens Memory Gardens, with military graveside services by the Navy Honor Guard and The Plains VFW. Memorial donations in memory of Bill may be sent to The Plains Lions Club, P.O. Box 2, The Plains, Ohio, 45780.
